Just as in Roda Polo the horse is replaced by an electric vehicle, and the Bike Polo League propels the ball from atop a bicycle, it was only a matter of time before the equine element was dispensed with altogether. And not only that: the game was taken to a place of extreme exclusivity.
Surrounded by a team of Argentinians renowned for their creativity and adaptability, the project began. This began the collaboration between two tourism companies: International Polo Tour and Hotels & Resorts at Sea. Their goal was to offer a "once-in-a-lifetime experience." Together, they inaugurated the first foot-polo match on the Antarctic continent.
This event combines polo, adventure, and luxury travel into a single proposition. On one hand, Hotels at Sea® Luxury Cruises is a major consultant and partner for luxury cruise lines worldwide. On the other, International Polo Tour organises polo tournaments in Argentina and the United States, in addition to advising brands on match sponsorship.
The two have made history by organising the first polo match in Antarctica within the International Polo Tour circuit. The journey began in Buenos Aires, taking a group of mostly American enthusiasts on an ultra-luxury expedition that blends sport, exploration, and daring at the end of the world.
For participants, the experience begins with polo practice sessions in Buenos Aires, where the company arranges a private match and acts as host.
Then, from Ushuaia in southern Argentina, the voyage continues aboard the world's most luxurious exploration yacht: the Scenic Eclipse, equipped with helicopters and a submarine. The expedition also includes over 10 scientists specialising in fields such as geology, marine biology, and glaciology, enriching the journey with a valuable educational component.
Upon reaching Antarctica, the inaugural foot-polo match commenced. The Hotels at Sea Polo Team faced off against the Scenic Cruises / Resorts at Sea Team on the frozen ground. This historic tournament marked the first foot-polo match ever played on the Antarctic continent. And more are to follow.
The estimated rates for this 10-day journey from Buenos Aires to the Antarctic Peninsula range from US$ 15,000 to US$ 48,000, depending on the services selected.
Beyond foot-polo, guests enjoy experiences such as helicopter tours, submarine dives in the frigid Southern Ocean, and dinners in the yacht's Michelin-starred restaurants. Yet foot-polo remains the undisputed highlight of the voyage.
The success of this unprecedented expedition marks just the beginning of future elite adventure and foot-polo journeys organised by International Polo Tour and Hotels & Resorts at Sea. The next are scheduled for August 2026. The company confirms they already have reservations from the United States, Canada, Australia, and Europe for the experience of kicking a ball in the most remote place on Earth.
