In a landmark move to energize the sport of polo across both its military and civilian sectors, the Indian government has abolished import duties on polo horses.
The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) recently authorized the duty-free import of polo equines for designated teams from the Indian Army and Navy, the Central Armed Police Forces, as well as for qualified civilian teams and players.
This exemption extends beyond military institutions to include elite civilian competitors. Eligible parties include teams that have participated in 14-goal tournaments recognized by the Indian Polo Association (IPA). Individual players with specific handicaps or notable achievements also qualify.
To access this benefit, importers must obtain a certificate issued by a Deputy Secretary in the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports.
